space and value; the principle of design I see is emphasis.
The photographer took a bust portrait of Frederick Douglass. (in black and white, which I believe was the times--there most likely wasn't colored photographs at this time.) The composition, elements of art, and principles help focus the image solely on Frederick Douglass. The subject might not be smiling because he is Frederick Douglass, and he is in a time period where black people weren't treated as equals. The picture looks the way it looks because of the cameras they had back then. We should look at this picture to remember the people who shaped our lives and the history that changed our lives. The picture is of Frederick Douglass, as I said earlier. It is in a little frame/case because cameras were different then--they can't take humongous pictures like we can today.

Douglass is not smiling because he was a serious person, as he was a strong advocate of the antislavery movement in the mid 1800s. Your welcome for the history lesson.

This emphasizes that Douglas is African American and that he's not happy about something in America such as slavery or inequality. 29. This is a picture of Frederick Douglass, a former slave in the 19th century. He was an abolitionist and published the North Star, an abolitionist newspaper. The reason for his lack of apparent happiness is because this was a very serious time for African Americans and he needed to be taken seriously, not as a joke. There is a good use of Douglass being the strong focal point of the image. It's very rusty because it was taken during the early stages of photography.

His expression reflects the anger he has as an abolitionist towards those who don't take him seriously due to his racial appearance. In this image, balance and emphasis helps make the overall feeling more present as well as revealing the time frame in which the photo was taken due to its rustic appeal.

  50. In this picture I see a portrait of a man in black and white, surrounded by a golden frame. This could mean that he is a very wealthy man without happiness in his life. One can infer that by the lack of color in the actual photo contrasting against the very bright gold that's covered in intricate designs. A reason as to why the subject isn't smiling could be that he is trying to pose professionally, or he is very unhappy with his life or an event occurring. This is a picture of Frederick Douglass (1818-95) who was a prominent American abolitionist, author and orator. Born a slave, Douglass escaped at age 20 and went on to become a world-renowned anti-slavery activist.

  115. This is an image of a portrait; a man was posing for this photograph. I see the element of color in this photograph. The principles of contrast is being used to add dimension to the photograph. The photographer focused the person in the central to ensure a strong focal point. The three all work together to portray the individual as a whole; it shows its time period because of the lack of color and increase in contrast. The photograph thought the person was worthy of being photographed. I believe that by not smiling, the individual shows a strong composure and presents himself as someone worthy of respect. This picture shows a representation of the earlier stages of photography.

This emphasizes that Douglas is African American and that he's not happy about something in America such as slavery or inequality. The little case and the colors of the portrait seem to resemble the time period in which it was made and it makes it much more influential.
