The photographer took a bust portrait of Frederick Douglass. (in black and white, which I believe was the times--there most likely wasn't colored photographs at this time.) The composition, elements of art, and principles help focus the image solely on Frederick Douglass. A reason as to why the subject isn't smiling could be that he is trying to pose professionally, or he is very unhappy with his life or an event occurring. ReplyDeleteThis is a Portrait of a Frederick Douglas, who was a major influence among the African American, as well as post civil war culture. I believe this portrait is nothing more than a portrait, however could be symbolism of a "freedman" having a successful life during a predominately extremist white society.
ReplyDeleteThis image show's a man standing still for the picture getting a self-portrait done. Some elements of art I see are color. Principles of design used are contrast and emphasis. ReplyDeletethis is an older photo put into a bright vibrant framing to lightten up the image. this photo was probably taken to hang in a house or maybe this man was of some importance. Or maybe he dressed up in older attire to show a flashback to that time period. the black and white photo encased by the colorful frame gets you to notice and focus on the person and creates a good focal point and contrast.

It looks like he is sitting down and just posing for the picture with just a straight face. It is in a little case because maybe it is part of a front cover of a book or in a picture frame to be put up. Although he is not smiling, he is showing and bringing out his personality and the person that he is. He shows great composure and professionalism.

This self portrait uses value and strong focal point because it uses black, white, and grey colors, also it only focuses on Frederick Douglas as the main point. He is not smiling because it portrays him mas a strong man who is unhappy of the inequality and unjust treatment of Free African Americans and African slaves. ReplyDeleteAs of right now I see frederick douglas' self portrait. It seems as though emphasis is used to create a strong focal point. I assumed he was photographed because he is a famous poet and African American icon. He isn't smiling because it took a long time to take pictures so it would be ludacris to try and hold a smile for that long.

ReplyDeleteThe man had a portrait of himself done. The element of art that is used is value. The principles that are used are emphasis and balance. The principles and element help tell the story by working together to emphasize the man in the picture. He is not smiling because he isn't happy about something that is happening in the world around him maybe and that would explain why the photographer took the photo. So then it would be seen that not everything is taken lightly and can have a big impact on some people more than others. The photo is in a frame or case to take away from the empty space in the background maybe.
